Ante Karamatić: Printing in Ubuntu

desktop | rendszergazda

Printing system in Ubuntu is more complex than on other distributions (not having root account and not running cupsys as root). The plan is to show the best ways to share printers over network and talk about bad configurations some of the users have. So, that should be something like a CUPS tutorial for Ubuntu.

Topics covered by the presentation:

  • Adding printers to Ubuntu (USB, LPT, IPP/SMB)
  • Using hp-toolbox and hp backend for HP printers
  • Setting up ubuntu as printer server for Linux, MacOS (=<10), Windows
  • More complicated setups of printer server (access control lists)
  • New GNOME print dialog
  • Myths about Ubuntu printing
  • Possibly sneak preview of replacment for gnome-cups-manager (if it
    gets addopted for Feisty)

He is 25 years old, born in Zagreb, Croatia. He's studying civil engineering in Zagreb (right, nothing to do with Linux, but he is admin there; lot's of projects there; long story :); using Linux operating
systems since 1997/98. First Red Hat, than Debian and a bit of Gentoo. He started using Ubuntu (on some computers) right after Warty release, but converted his laptop from Gentoo to Ubuntu after Hoary release. Just before Breezy he joined the MOTU team and after Breezy started the Ubuntu-hr LoCo Team (with Mario Đanić and a couple of other guys). Since then he worked for a Red Hat partner company in Croatia (that included getting RHCE certificate). Couple of monts later he had quit and since then he is working as a freelancer only with Debian and Ubuntu systems. He is also member of the ubuntu-printing team and maintaining a couple of programs/packages in Ubuntu (wifi-radar, j2re1.4-mozilla-plugin).
